Ten Bamboo Studio

Ten Bamboo Studio compiled and printed by Hu Zhengyan in the late Ming Dynasty is a Book of books and paintings, which also has the function of teaching painting methods for copying. It is divided into eight categories: calligraphy and painting, Mohua, fruit spectrum, plume, orchid spectrum, bamboo spectrum, plum spectrum and stone spectrum. It collects his own paintings and reproduces 30 famous works of the ancients and the Ming Dynasty. There are about 20 paintings in each spectrum, all equipped with excellent calligraphy poems, a total of 180 paintings and 140 calligraphy works. This is the color reprint of Hu's shizhuzhai in Nanjing in the sixth year of Chongzhen of the Ming Dynasty (1633). This copy is now stored in the library of Cambridge University

shizhuzhai calligraphy and painting manual has been printed for 15 years from the first book of calligraphy and painting in Wanli Jiwei (1619) to the eighth book of fruit in Chongzhen Guiyou (1633). Each spectrum has a preface. Except for the bamboo spectrum with bamboo rhyme and the orchid spectrum with hand gesture, there are 40 other spectra, one picture and one text, which complement each other with books and paintings. The paintings were painted by Hu Zhengyan and famous artists at that time, such as Wu Bin, Wu Shiguan, Wei Zhike, Mi Wanzhong, Wen Zhenheng, etc. In addition to the "blue spectrum", there are celebrity questions on the opposite side of the plate. According to Cheng Jiajue's "records outside the gate", shizhuzhai often employs more than ten engravers, and Hu Zhengyan "does not match craftsmen". One of the famous engravers is Wang Kai. Hu and his "study day and night, ten years like a day", so "all good workmanship and skills are increasingly refined". This manual and shizhuzhai paper manual are valuable heritages in the history of printmaking in China, and have a great impact on the later woodblock watermark technology and printmaking art
