CalArts School of Film/Video is pleased and honored to present a program of films from its MFA and BFA Experimental Animation programs. Our presence in Beijing is an exhilarating opportunity bringing together a rich mix of techniques and unique visions. The Experimental Animation Program promotes animation as fine art. Students explore varied contexts and forms, developing a personal aesthetic over a body of work. Our students come from many countries and contribute to hybrid notions of community. The diverse faculty in the Experimental Animation Program offers its students a complex and supportive group of engaged filmmakers. Together, through mentoring and coursework, students are encouraged to discover that the role of the filmmaker today is shaped by many factors that connect us to the world around us. Social practice is as much now a part of their work as reckoning an apocalypse with imaginary landscapes.
The selected works in this program cover a three-year period demonstrating a deep understanding of how animation can shake up how much can be said within this art form. In this richly colored, crystal-clear atmosphere, there are but those that are there symbolize our search for the unattainable. Diverse and fertile, these works foreground the technological apparatus and material processes within the dual significances of figurative and symbolic tools. Using light, scale, performance and projection to create shifting discrepancies of ambiguity, they combine analog mechanical devices and digital computer technology. These individual filmmakers understand the complex nature of process. Memoir has a role in a number of works. In one, a man looks back on his childhood at the crisis his parents confronted and in another, memoir is masked yet compels us to be drawn into its absurd setting. A motion portrait of a bicycle reveals that everything is there before us, nothing is hidden. Social pressures, archival sources, relationships and identity are some of the areas explored. Throughout this program, and as a fundamental basis for the work, drawing is alive and fertile whether done with graphite or the computer.
