“2019 Smart City Eco-Lighting Technology Application Forum” was held on June 27, 2019 in the Science and Technology Studios of Shanghai Science Hall. The forum  was themed around “Aesthetic Culture + Technology to Support Smart City Construction” with the attendance of more than 250 related experts and scholars in the field  to discuss the issue of smart city development. Prof. Chang Zhigang, Executive Deputy Director of the CAFA VAII, was invited to host the forum. He made the keynote speech, The Third Screen in the Internet Era.


Prof. Chang Zhigang’s opening keynote speech in "2019 Smart City Eco-Lighting Technology Application Forum" 



During the speech, Prof. Chang Zhigang suggested that the “Screen of the Internet of Things (IOT Screen)”  of media lighting in urban construction nowadays has become the “third screen”following after the Internet and smartphones in the Internet era. With the extensive use of intelligently controlled LED technology, urban lighting has formed a big city screen while meeting the urban functional requirements. This starts up a new dimension of site construction and space communication in a city, becoming a merging edge between the physical and a virtual world. Hence it creates a brand-new "communication" paradigm in the said 2 mixed worlds. It not only differentiates city images, creates a unique nighttime landscape, but boosts certain economic industrial chains.
 



Luminaires are like ‘nerve terminals’ that spread over the skin of one city, therefore they could possibly function as IOT terminals. The smart lighting environment with the core of media buildings will become a IOT-based supra-visual system, as said by Prof. Chang during his speech.
  



He emphasized that the key to activate “the third screen” is through interactions, which is to say, arts intervenes in man-environment and man-man interactions achieving urban communication and information platforms, plus the application of data collection, etc. to support smart city construction. He further illustrated the application demo design of Beijing New Airport high-speed lighting combined with big data as a case study.







At the end of the speech, Prof. Chang Zhigang proposed that the future of smart city development should take visual art as the core of the innovation strategy, interaction designs as the method practicing the IOT, innovative&advanced concepts to facilitate crossover, and the forerunning of ideas to lead the industry.
